Godai is a ronin (one who has failed a university entrance exam) and is living in a run down apartment house called Maison Ikkoku. The other residents are the nosy Ichinose, the sexy Akemi Roppongi, and the mysterious Yotsuya. The others are given to having wild parties which makes it difficult for Godai to study. Into this huge mess comes the recently widowed Kyoko as the new live-in manager. Godai starts crushing on her, but he doesn't have the guts to ask her out on a date. As time passes, their relationship slowly develops while they're at at Maison Ikkoku, despite all sorts of romantic hurdles.
