Chiyo "Chiyo-Chan" Mihama
Chiyo-Chan is a 10 year-old child prodigy because she is so smart
(chan= little in Japanese). She
skipped five grades because of her super genius IQ, so now she is in
high school instead of the fifth grade. Chiyo is also
pretty rich; she has a huge house and even a summer home! Chiyo is
really
adorable and sincere, and polite (e.g. addressing people by "Miss" or
"Mister"). Everyone envies her because she is so smart, and graduates
as class valedictorian (wins an award for having the best academic
record). However, she often has a hard time getting people to take her
seriously. The only thing she can use some work on is becoming a better
athlete.
Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga
Ayumu, or "Osaka", is a transfer student from Osaka, which is why
people call her Osaka. Osaka spaces out all the time. She transferred
from her old school in Osaka because she felt she needed a new start,
but it didn't really help. She still manages to focus her attention on
floating dust particles rather than school work. Her interests include
splitting chopsticks neatly and telling horror stories. Her dislikes
include spicy foods and escalators. She has more than once just
pondered the meaning of a word in the middle of a conversation and
missed the rest of it. She would sometimes come back to a conversation
after those moments and have no idea on what was going on. No matter
how funny she talks, she can still be a pretty decent person.
Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara
Yomi has a fairly laid back attitude, and no singing ability (watch
episode 17 to see for yourself). By far, she is the most mature of the
group and the most "normal". She and Tomo have been friends since they
were a lot younger, so they know all of each other's secrets. The only
time Yomi gets very crazy is when she's fighting with Tomo. At that
point, she's not afraid to show her wild side. Her only insecurity
seems to be her weight. She is constantly starting strange new diets,
and doesn't want anyone to find out about it.
Sakaki
Sakaki is a very quiet and shy student. She's tall (doesn't really
enjoy it), and athletic. Other students think she is really cool. She
loves all things that are cute, mainly cats (she is obcessed with cats). She even dreams about
giant talking cats that eat tomatoes. She constantly tries to pet cats,
and in most cases they bite her. About the only animal she tries to pet
and doesn't bite her is Mr. Tadakichi. She's adored by a girl in school
named Kaorin, but Sakaki never really pays attention to her. Sakaki is
very kind, but everyone is nervous to be around her because of how shy
she is and how "beautiful" she looks. Later, she gets along fine with
everyone and makes many friends.
Tomo Takino
Rambunctious and full of energy, Tomo Takino is the liveliest and
most annoying member of the group. Tomo is definitely not the most
dedicated student because of how poor her grades are. In fact, she
could care less about school and copies her friends homework. She's
always yelling and running around. She is best friends with Yomi
because they've known each other since grade school. Tomo likes to poke at
her friends, and she usually gets poked at back. She loves
competing with her friends so she can be the best at everything, but sometimes she can get a bit cocky.
Kagura
Kagura is a very athletic girl and a bit of a tomboy. Kagura
immediately wants to challenge Sakaki and declares a friendly rivalry,
even though Sakaki isn’t very interested in sports. Kagura gets along
well with Tomo, and both of them eventually become very good friends
and disrupt class, along with Osaka. She is a member of the swim team
and runs a lot in order to train. Like many athletes, Kagura has a
problem with her grades, but not as bad as Tomo. For a brief time, she, Osaka, and Tomo formed
a group called "the Three Knuckleheads" because of their bad grades in
school.
Yukari Tanizaki
Yukari is the foreign language (English) teacher. She acts like a
child sometimes. She likes to sleep late, go out and eat Korean
barbeque and other fancy foods, drink sake, beer, and other alcoholic
beverages. She lets her students just call her Yukari or Miss Yukari
instead of Miss Tanazaki or Tanazaki Sensei. Her best friend since she
her childhood days is Minamo Kurosawa. Yukari loves betting with Minamo
for money and food, but she usually loses anyway because of her
horrible gambling skills. She insults Minamo because she doesn't have a
boyfriend, but she's one to talk because she's single also. At the bar,
she makes Minamo pay the tab for her.
Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa
Minamo is an athletic P.E. teacher at school. She is very nice to
her students, treating them with juice and other stuff, even if they
lose at the school annual Sports Festival. Her and Yukari are best
friends, though sometimes they seem like the don't get along. Minamo is
a lot more laid back and mature than Yukari. She's called "Nyamo" by
Yukari (she gave her the nickname when they were in school). She is
sort of like a grown up version of Yomi. The only person who can really
get her going is her friend Yukari, just like Tomo gets Yomi going.
Also, Yukari knows all of Minamo's secrets, just like Tomo knows
Yomi's. Minamo may soon get married while Yukari is most likely going
to remain single.
