There are two types of Dragon Balls, one with black stars and one with
red stars. For each, you must find seven balls (e.g. one star, two
star, etc.) The red balls were introduced at the beginning of DB. The
black balls are introduced in the beginning of DBGT, when Emperor Pilaf
finds them and turns Goku into a kid. These are different from the Red
Star Dragon Balls because for the black ones, if you don't find all
seven in a year, the planet the wish was made on will explode. Also,
the red ones are scattered across the planet and the black ones are
scattered across the entire world. With these balls in DBGT, there were
dragons who were holding onto them, instead of them being hidden in a
random spot. You can also make better wishes with these ones than the
red ones. Still with both, you can only make one wish, and once you
find the balls, they are scattered and you have to wait a year to find
them again.
