Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy is a young boy who wishes to become a pirate, and eventually the king. Luffy greatly admires Shanks, the leader of a gang of pirates staying in his town. One day he accidentally eats a "cursed fruit" (gum gum). Luffy permanently lost the ability to swim, but his body can now stretch like rubber. However, immediately after that, he angered Shanks' enemies, the bandits. Luffy was then tossed into the water in the middle of the sea. As he was drowning, a monster attacked Luffy, but in a split-second, Shanks was there to save him, and he sacrificed his arm in order to do this. Ten years later, using Shanks' straw hat as his trademark, Luffy set out for sea. His great journey to become a pirate had begun, and his journey to the "Grand Line". Some of Luffy's companions include Zoro (pirate hunter), Nami (thief/ navigator), Usopp (teller of "tall tales"/marksman), and Sanji (chef).

Roronoa Zoro

Back in his homeland, the young Roronoa Zoro had been somewhat of a troublemaker until he began learning kendo. Eventually, he was able to wield one sword, and soon three. He challenged a girl named Kuina to a bunch of swordfights (of course the swords weren't real). Zoro did not know that he would be up against a girl, and Zoro felt cocky because he thought girls are weaker than guys, and he lost every time they faced each other. Kuina began changing (as she grew older) and wasn't really into sword-fighting that much anymore. Zoro refused to accept that, and they agreed to continue training until one of them became the best swords master in the world. Unfortunately, Kuina's dream was cut tragically short not long after, even as Zoro had began working on wielding a third sword in his mouth. After Kuina's death, he asked for (and received) Kuina's sword (a real one) as a gesture to continue the dream that they both had. He keeps her memory alive each time he wields this third sword between his teeth. After many more years of training, Zoro finally set out to prove himself worthy, and he soon met up with Luffy.

When Zoro was grown up, he was a pirate hunter. He happened to later meet and anger the spoiled son of a rogue naval captain named "AxeHand" (Captain) Morgan when Zoro beat him up to defend a little girl. Morgan's son threatened to destroy the village if Zoro wouldn't be his prisoner for a month. Instead of him being a prisoner, Morgan's son had lied and attempted to have Zoro executed. Three days before his time was up, Luffy showed up looking for him. In exchange for his swords and his freedom, Zoro agreed to be part of Luffy's crew and give up being a pirate hunter. Zoro is sometimes a lazy bum and takes frequent naps.

Nami

Nami is the navigator for Luffy's pirate crew, and she likes to steal treasure from other pirates (e.g. gold). Nami hates pirates. Her childhood is filled with dark memories of pirate pillage and plunder. She (along with Nojiko) were raised by a Marine named Bellemare until the village where they were living (Cocoyashi Village) was ravaged by merman pirates. Bellemare was killed because she lacked money for a tribute (no money to pay taxes for each person in her family to the mermen). Nami was then forced to work for the pirates making maps when her natural talent for cartography was discovered. Her mission was to work for the mermen and pretend to befriend them while making maps for them, even though she only worked for the mermen to make money to buy Cocoyashi Village back. She carries the mark of the Arlong pirates on her right shoulder (normally covered by her shirt) as a reminder of her obligation.

Sanji

Sanji is a sympathetic cook and the chef for Luffy's pirate crew. He used to work in the Baratie (restaurant in the middle of the East Blue Sea) as assistant chef before Luffy asked him to join their pirate adventures. He was raised by a captain pirate called Red-Legged Zeff. When Sanji was 10, he and Zeff were deserted on a small island, and they were forced to live for three months without any food supplies (Zeff's ship was destroyed by a huge storm at night). Zeff was even willing to cut off his own leg in order to prevent Sanji from drowning. Sanji likes young women, especially Nami. He tends to smoke a lot and is rarely seen without a cigarette hanging from his mouth (in the US version, this was changed to a cherry-flavored lollipop). He also has the power to destroy 21 baseball bats with one kick. Sanji's goal is to travel to the Great Blue.

Usopp

Usopp is the son of the pirate Yasopp. He is a teller of tall tales, either to entertain people or to do it as a joke. Unfortunately, the people in his town don't really trust him because whenever he screamed "the pirates are coming", the pirates weren't there. When the pirates were really there, the townspeople thought he was lying. Other than telling a bunch of fibs, he is a pretty decent marksman, but a big chicken when it comes to really fighting. He joined Luffy's crew and he is in charge of the cannons. He is the captain of the Veggie Pirates, even though it is just a group of three boys who use pots and pans as their weapons. Whenever Luffy defeats an enemy and Usopp helped a little bit, he claims he did everything and tries to steal all of the glory. He can be a decent person, especially when he tries to cheer up Kaya by telling her tall tales when she is sick. He is probably a portrayal of Pinocchio because his nose is huge and he tells many lies.
