Genius middle-schooler Takamine Kiyomaro shows a depressing attitude
towards life and is an outsider (very impopular, always gets picked on)
at his school. One day, Kiyomaro meets a mysterious boy called Zatch
Bell. Zatch was found unconscious one day in the woods of England.
Kiyomaro's father eventually found Zatch and he had lost his entire
memory. The only clue to Zatch's identity was a red book (spell book)
he was carrying when he was found. Unfortunately, the book is in a
wierd language that no one can decipher. The only way to is when the
mamono's human owner helps them become more powerful, and the mamono
also has to have a special bond with their owner. However, when
Kiyomaro looks through the book, he notices that there is one word he
can read. When he reads the word aloud (Zakair), thunder comes out of
Zatch's mouth. All mamonos have their own books, which will enable them
to use magic when they find the right human that is able to read the
"magic words" with lots of spirit in their voice. Zatch is a mamono
(“monster”) boy from "makai" ("demon world"). He was sent to the human
world along with 99 other mamono children that fight for the title of
mamono king (or queen). Once a mamono's book is burned, that mamono is
sent back to their world and is out of the running for becoming king.
