AnimeLuvers | What is Manga? What is Manga?

So, what in the world is manga?

Manga is refered to as a Japanese comic book. Manga, or Japanese style comics, are considered to be professional comic books. The writers/artists of manga are called Mangaka. Of course there are fans that wish to be able to create the same high quality work as professional writers and artists, which leads these people to also produce manga. When the amateur writers and artists try to create manga, they are usually refered to as Doujinshi.

Doujinshi can vary from being either a low or high quality. Amateur fans will sometimes be noticed by the original writer/artist or a publication company. If you get pretty lucky, you can get hired to help work on a manga that is currently being worked on or help create a new one. If you are even luckier, you can get a job to be able to create your own manga and get it published.

Manga is a respected form of literature/artform and can be made for any age group, like young children, teens, adults, and even for the very perverted people (like Miroku^.~). In some cases, manga can be considered a predecessor (previous version) of anime, video games or even live-action movies.

Manga is distributed in Japan by being printed in a book about as thick as a phonebook called a manga magazine. They are very cheap and their circulation is wide-spread. These books come out in weekly or monthly issues and will contain anywhere from 10-20 works from different writers/artists. Each of those books that come out will feature a certain manga and 10-40 pages of that particular manga will be featured. This is so people can get an idea of what each manga is about.

In America, magazines like Shonen Jump feature works such as Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, DBZ, and more. They're read from right to left (like a regular manga book) and feature somewhere around 7 titles with a couple chapters of each of them (around 2). Also, you can find other things such as fan art, fan mail, advertisements on other anime items (e.g. movies and video games), and more. You can get a brief idea of what the anime is about, even if in that issue, they aren't showing chapter 1. There are about 400 pages in each issue.

Also, distributing manga isn't just by those huge books. You can buy seperate books of each series. There are around 7 chapters in a book and there are an average of like 25 books per series, but that is just an estimate. I recommend getting manga this way rather than in a huge book that you have to wait a month for each issue.
