Yusuke Urameshi
The hero of the story. Yusuke Urameshi is a troubled juvenile at the
start of the series; he sacrifices his life to save a little boy from
getting run over by a car. However his death was unexpected and Yusuke
was given another chance at life. He had to go through an crazy fiesco
to hatch a spirit egg that fed off of his energy. If his energy was
negative from negative actions, a beast would hatch and devour him. On
the flip side, if he did positive things, a guide would emerge from the
egg and lead his soul back to his body. Many of his teachers hated him,
and they go out of their way to make Yusuke very angry. Even Yusuke's
name alone strikes fear into anyone who has even heard of him. When
Yusuke's girlfriend Kayko was stuck in a fire, Yusuke gave up his only
chance at coming back to save her by using the power of the egg.
However, Koenma decided that Yusuke had passed the test and Yusuke was
fortunately granted his life back, but as a price Yusuke had to take on
the position as a Spirit Detective solving cases for the Spirit World.
Kazuma Kuwabara
The long time rival of Yusuke, Kuwabara was always picking fights
with Yusuke and losing each 100% of the time. Kuwabara is very loyal to
his friends and follows his own special code of honor. He also has a
very high awareness of the Spirit World or Spirit Awareness, and can
sense the super-natural extremely well. When Yusuke dies, Kuwabara is a
wreck because he needed someone to fight, and he didn't want Yusuke to
leave undefeated. Kuwabara also became the guy to beat as he was the
strongest fighter next to Yusuke. This gave him some problems, and the
evil teachers at his school needed someone else to pick on with Yusuke
gone, so they came after Kuwabara as well. Kuwabara helped revive
Yusuke because he was a connection because of his high spirit
awareness. He helped save Yusuke's body from a fire, and saved Kayko
from some thugs making him a valuable ally for Yusuke. Kuwabara has
some very special tricks hidden up his sleeve.
Hiei
A rogue and loner (and triclops), Hiei leads a very mysterious life.
Born as a fire demon to an ice demon mother, Hiei was an outcast and
kicked out of his mother's village. Hiei managed to survive however,
and started acquiring some skills for battle. Hiei made some close
connections in the Spirit World, among them was a longtime friendship
with (Yoko) Kurama. After initally fighting, Hiei and Kurama gained a
mutual respect for each other and became friends. Hiei later learned he
had a sister, but the odds of finding her were very small. So Hiei
underwent a painful operation to have a Jagan eye implanted in his
head. It not only allowed him incredible powers, but with it he could
more easily sense his sister's energy. He wears a white bandage around
his forehead to cover up the spirit eye. He also wears the bandages
around his arms to cover up the dragon tatoos. The one on his right arm
sometimes "acts up" so he hurts his arm for that "wierd" reason.
Kurama
Kurama's many origins are strange. He was originally a spiritu fox
who had a knack for breaking puzzles and stealing treasures. But he
made a powerful enemy and used his remaining strength to put his spirit
energy in to the body of a human. He grew up with only his mother who
he always thought was inferior until she almost died (he wished off of
a mirror for her to be safe). Hiei tracked Kurama down to help steal
three artifacts from King Yama, but Kurama got out of the alliance and
used the Forlorn Hope to save his human mother's life. Now he fights
with Yusuke and the others and he is very formidable in battle. They
fortunately were able to become allies.
Genkai
As a master psychic, Genkai held a tournament to find a sucessor for
her incredible powers. Yusuke was chosen as her sucessor and has gone
through many rigorous months of training. Genkai joins Yusuke and the
others in the Dark Tournament in disguise to help Yusuke defeat her
rival, the evil Toguro. Genkai holds the power of the "Spirit Wave" and
a bunch of other techniques. She is also able to transform back to her
youth form. Genkai loses most of her powers when she transfers her
Spirit Wave Orb to Yusuke, and is eventually killed by Toguro. Yusuke
took this situation very seriously.
Botan
Botan acts like a guide to Yusuke. Early on she was a ghost like
Yusuke, and couldn't make contact with a human. After Yusuke gets
brought back to life, Botan takes on a human form to assist Yusuke. She
actually serves under Koenma and is actually the Grim Reaper. Botan's
age and experience are crucial to Yusuke in some situations; however
she can sometimes be a big moron.
Koenma
Koenma is the Prince of the Spirit World, and he is usually in
charge of it, as his father King Yama travels a lot. Despite his looks
Koenma is very old, and wise (he looks like a toddler or a teenager).
He often is forced to send Yusuke on cases where Yusuke has no chance,
but Yusuke's emotions help him pull through. The reasons he chose
Yusuke as the Spirit Detective go unknown early on. He went crazy
because he was very dedicated to his job.
